The adventure begins. Well it wasn't so much of an adventure really. It mostly involved driving, reading, studying, eating, and sleeping. But somewhat akin to adventure in how it tested the bounds of my discipline and dedication to a goal that is a long long long way off. I suppose that I just have to remember that sometimes things are closer than they appear.

The Rest of the Best
April 14th 2007
We took our yuppie-mobile to Pentiction for the Fest of Ale. Erroneously believing it to be a local beer tasting event we contemplated maybe having to dress up, asking each other questions like "do you spit at a beer tasting?" and "I wonder what we get for cleansing the palate?" In reality it was more of an excuse to catch up with our super fun, talented, and greatly missed (by me!) friends James and Verena who were volunteering for Crannóg Ales. Once we arrived we realised that it was more of a "chug-as-much-beer-as-you-can-before-seven-and-try-to-score" kind of event. The crowd consisting of 'barely nineteen' girls, frat boys, old alcoholics, bikers, and a smattering of uptight looking professionals. We weren't sure which category we wanted to fit into. Attire seemed casual to say the least, as ample skin exposure provided spots to stick "Mike's Hard Lemonade" tattoos and the men wore shirts like "I Like Chicks Who Like Chicks", "For My Next Trick I'll Need a Condom and a Volunteer" and our favorite, "The Liver is Evil, It Deserves to Be Punished".
We hung around the pulled pork vendor so John could get his meat groove on and bought mostly Crannóg ales, as "Backhand of God" stout and "Bogtrotter Brown Ale" were our favorite bevvys. Did a lot of people watching and hung around James and Verena while they worked. All in all, entertaining but as the decibel and drunkenness level rose throughout the afternoon we decided to split before it got ugly(er).
Went back to the Sandman. Napped the rest of the afternoon and realised when James, Verena and Arron showed up around 7:30 that we must have all reached adulthood as our only aspirations for the evening were to eat salad and get a good nights sleep before climbing at Skaha Bluffs the next day.

Had a gorgeous day. Enjoyed watching John climb. Also enjoyed getting spanked by the rock my first day out since January. Yep. Gotta love it when you can't make the first move on a 5.7!! Sometimes Gneiss rock is not so nice :) Saw Verena and gang laying the smack down on the routes around us and was entertained by the fact that if you really want to freak V out, try and show her your fallen off toenails! Hee hee. Found some entertainment in nearby climber who was bragging to his girlfriend that he could climb a certain route in his flip flops it was so easy--only to watch him have to be lowered down after 2 moves. Whoops.
On our way out some young lads were climbing one of Guy's routes when we saw a flash of legs and chalk bag to whizzing buy which yells of "dude that was a whipper", "wicked whipper man!" and "dude, did you check my whipper?" Ahhh young 'dudes'.
Dinner with John's sister Deidre, Robert and baby Liam was lovely. A postprandial trip to the park showed me that John can have just as much fun on the monkey bars and slides as a 15 month old can!
At Lennie's urging we bought a bottle of Mateus and had our white-trash-night-out in a cheap motel as gut rot and rumblings did not seem too conducive to camping that night.
April 16th 2007
Got up nice and early, nearly received 3rd degree burns from wired *Bucs barrista who (accidentally) flipped a large cup of boiling water in my direction. After jumping out of the way to only a soggy foot and spray on the joggers she said "well at least it was only water", John mumbling "10000 degree Celsius water". One apology from manager and free coupon later we trucked out to the Bluffs again, only to find it windy, overcast and chilly. So we wimped out and went wine tasting instead!
Mission Hill is swanky and the tasting folks were nice but Quails' Gate Winery was more fun and their Pinot, Ice Wines, and Gewurztraminer all kicked anything we tasted at MH out of the running. We stocked up and headed home. To our favorite livingroom in the world, Anne Marie and Ryan's. John hoping to cash in on a dinner invite proved to be successful and we dined on shrimp tacos, spaghetti squash and chocolate turtles. Couldn't have been a better bookend to a weekend of wine, food, friends, oh...and frat boys.

Hot Date Part Deux
So. After 5 loooooong weeks I finally got home. John picked me up from the airport in Kelowna. And he was a lovely sight for tired eyes. We returned to the lovely pre-trip B & B (Caps on Cadder) where we enjoyed some nice Veuve Clicquot, smelly cheese and salty crackers whilst waiting for our dinner resos.
My apologies but the foodie in me must now take over and describe in detail the great food and wine we enjoyed later at Mark's restaurant (Waterfront Wines Winebar and Bistro--it is a must eat if ever in Kelowna).
We (again) enjoyed the calamari with smoked eggplant, cilantro, tomato appy and tried a new one...scallops which are crusted with delicate spices (I am sure I detected fennel in there somewhere), barely seared and served with pink grapefruit and avocado. For the mains we had monkfish which blew my mind! So fall-apart-in-your-mouth-which-is-watering. Though best described by Mark as "halibut and butter flavored" with crispy crab gyoza and carrot puree. John had the steak which was perfectly grilled and juicy with yummy potatoes and other things I am sure but by then the Champagne, bottle of Seven Deadly Zins and glasses of Wild Goose Gewurztraminer had gone to my head. Our server laughed when we tried to find a wine paring for the monkfish and steak. Hence the bottle of Red and glasses of not-red. A fabulous chocolate tart which was warm and gooey inside finished us off and John turned to me, his eyes only slightly softened by etoh and declared we should probably head home while we could still stand. At that point the camera came out, and a booth photo shoot of us trying to get a nice picture of us out on our date turned into a hilarious debacle which resulted in getting busted taking our own photo by both Mark and our server. Mark offered to take one for us and (can you believe it?) it turned out to be the best of the bunch. So. There you have it.

Main St. Cambridge Bay, NU
Though the Weather Outside Is Cold
I just love things like the one hour parking sign at the airport or the stop sign in the middle of the tundra. My photo album from Cambridge Bay is fairly slim as most days the temperature allowed my fingertips to be exposed for less than 30 sec before the effects of the cold made it impossible to take photos. Not to mention the camera's function is slightly delayed at -40...go figure.
Ester is Unconvinced
Small small small small world. Elks Hall, Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. After a few tasty sips of box red wine Lenny (right) meets military man (centre) and joins our table. We discover he knows my brother Shandy from the Airborne Regiment and proves his former membership with the Airborne coin (shown in photo).
Esther--my lawyer friend--is unconvinced (as pictured to left). Believing his claims of military work in Arctic sovereignty to be a ploy to get to our table, she stands strong behind her belief despite displays of several pieces of military i.d.
No matter what, we were again shown that quirky, interesting folks with wild tales of adventure and misadventure are hiding in all sorts of places in this crazy world...and sometimes they'll know your brother...better yet, sometimes they'll buy a couple of rounds of beer.

Pepsi Madness

She can be heard moving furniture around at night, trying to find a few drops left in cans she may have dropped behind the couch. Licking the dried brown syrup that coats the rims of cans found in the trash. But no. It is never enough, is it Sandy?
I hear her advising patients on a healthy breakfast each morning while I secretly know only that brown elixir floats in her gut until noon.
But she's not all bad. Her caloric intake is probably well below the norm (even on those days that she eats lemon pie for lunch and dinner) and her fine figure and skin will go on to prove that junk food can't be all that bad for you.
As I write this she is going through DT's, hallucinations, crawling skin, the shakes. We tried to give her 7-Up but now she is writhing on the couch claiming the clear fizzles have "turned her gut".
Must go and provide ministrations to the sick. Look at yourself Sandy.

The Mentees First Stitch
We were lucky enough to have a patient who agreed to let Kayla and Sandy try their hand at suturing--on his head. A great guy who actually fell asleep during the procedure, giving credit to their gentle, expert touch. No he didn't fall asleep because he was unconscious.
Actually outcome was good. And they obviously were enjoying themselves.

Early Morning (instant) Coffee
Me and the Man. The Good Man. The missed man. A moment of weakness forced my hand to upload a pic of John and I. Thought the masses who read my profession of love should at least get a look at him.
